Jakarta, 24 August 2020 – Minister of Foreign Affairs, Retno Marsudi and Minister of BUMN, Erick Tohir ended their visit to China (19-20 / 08) and the United Arab Emirates (21-22 / 08). The visit aims to ensure the availability of vaccines and medical devices to strengthen government efforts in handling Covid-19 and cooperation in the fields of investment, trade, energy and food.
“Both of us were sent by the President to follow up on several bilateral cooperation, including cooperation in the field of vaccines and other economic cooperation to two countries at the same time, namely to the PRC and the UAE,” said Foreign Minister Retno.
During their visit to China, the two ministers met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wangyi, visiting pharmaceutical companies, namely Sinovac, Sinopharm, CanSino, and China Railway.
At the bilateral meeting with the PRC Foreign Minister, the two parties discussed the commitment of the two countries to continue to strengthen bilateral cooperation based on the principles of mutual respect and mutual benefit, a commitment to continue to maintain regional stability and security, as well as a commitment to increase cooperation in the field of vaccines.
“Indonesia conveyed the importance of adequate, timely, safe, and affordable vaccines,” said Foreign Minister Retno when meeting Foreign Minister Wangyi.
The two parties have also agreed on an essential business travel corridor arrangement for business and official travel safely. China is the third country, after previously Indonesia entered into this arrangement with the UAE and South Korea.
The two Ministers also witnessed the signing of 2 cooperation agreements between Bio Farma and Sinovac for the supply of 40 million doses of vaccine for Indonesia from November 2020 to March 2021, and Sinovac’s priority to supply vaccines for Bio Farma for the April – December 2021 period.
On a visit to the UAE, Foreign Minister Retno and Minister Erick met with the UAE Foreign Minister and the UAE Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, as well as met with UAE companies engaged in the pharmaceutical, energy and food sectors.
During this visit, Indonesia also encouraged UAE cooperation by utilizing the UAE’s strategic position and network for marketing Indonesian products to the Middle East and Africa region.
As in China, in the UAE the two ministers witnessed the signing of 2 cooperation agreements between G42, the UAE Health technology company, Kimia Farma and Bio Farma.
Kimia Farma and G42 will develop vaccine products with the scope of cooperation in the fields of medicinal products, health services, research and clinical trials, vaccine production and others. Meanwhile, with Bio Farma, G42 will collaborate in the fields of research, development, production and distribution based on laser technology and AI for Covid-19 screening.
“We are currently focusing on cooperation on the provision of vaccines and COVID-19 detection or screening tools using laser technology and Artificial Intelligence,” said Foreign Minister Retno.
The visit to the UAE was also in order to strengthen cooperation in the energy sector, namely between Pertamina and ADNOC (the UAE national oil company), between PLN and PT Masdar in the construction of a solar power plant at Cirata Reservoir, as well as the realization of investment by the UAE company, Elite Agro in agribusiness sector in Subang.
The involvement of BUMN in various collaborations is part of the BUMN transformation efforts, so that cooperation with outside parties can be followed by a transfer of knowledge and technology.
